He has been excited for this day to come for months, walked around singing “It’s my [tag] first day of school [/tag] ya ya ya,” over and over again. He wakes up tired from staying up to late to many nights and now the morning calls his name. Thinking that he would be gleaming with excitement, he’s not, he has an earache. We give him some Children’s Tylenol, some decongestion and wait for the effects to come in to play. Looking in to his eyes I wasn’t feeling like it was the first day of school ya ya ya. An hour goes by and he is feeling better, finally smiling, realizing it’s his first day of school, and after the twentieth picture it is time to roll out. With video camera in hand I try to get every angle and picture I can for this is the first day of the rest of his young life. As I walk him up it crosses my mind, soon he will be excepting his diploma and moving on to the next level, adult life. My last huge, kiss, and thumbs up as he mouths the words from across the room, “Your going to pick me up, right dad.” I shake my head yes with a tear in my eye, point to him as I would be telling him you’re the man, it’s time for parents to leave.
