The buying and selling of links is not so much the problem with Page Rank as much as linking to irrelevant blogs or websites. For example if I got a request from this blog to link to my photography blog then Google with think that the links are either bought or part of a link exchange. Google has no idea if money changed hands for linking, they just assume that any links from a website or blog to another website or blog that has different subject matter is a bought link.

If you plan on doing paid posts on your blog just make sure the subject matter of the paid post and your blog is the same. Google will not go after you for writing about diet pills on a blog about weight loss but they will if your blog is about cars and you link to a site about diet pills.

What Google is going after is irrelevant linking.
